While it's nice to use VirusTotal, when it comes to detecting phishing/malicious sites I've found it to be lacking.

URLScan.io has a free API that gives you "X" amount of lookups and does a great job of detecting phishing pages that many web filters don't detect.

The ability to utilize other services for lookups will be beneficial.  Other examples are SophosLabs (Intellix), Hybrid-Analysis, Alienvault OTX, etc.
